Tour de Fleece day 6; samples

I did not get to spin yesterday; family time instead.
So today I got back at the wheel with gusto. I did not make a huge volume of yarn, but I did work on samples I've been meaning to do for ages. A friend has requested sport weight - DK weight yarn for a specific project, so I made some samples to show what's possible.

The fibre is merino/silk slivers from Ashford. The first mini skein was made from carded mini-rolags; spun woollen (ie fluffy & airy) and then chain-plied. It's 30 metres of approx. sport weight.
The second sample was spun from the same fibre type; split lengthways into pencil-roving thickness & spun worsted (fibres parallel, for a smoother, harder wearing yarn), & then chain-plied. It's 15 metres of an almost-DK weight yarn. The carded fibre gives a more even colour throughout the yarn (on the left); I think this would be the better option for lace or cable patterns. The non-carded fibre (on the right) gives a smoother texture yarn, with more clearly visible plies & a more variegation in colour; I think this will distract from anything other than the plainest of stitch patterns.
