Finished objects; handspun shawl & cowls

I've been on a bit of a relatively thoughtless knitting rampage lately; stocking stitch with occasional bits of texture, and with nobody in mind for the finished knits.

First up, a simple triangular shawl that I knit as an antidote to all the machine washable baby knits I have been making recently, started about a month ago. The fibre is bluefaced leicester from Hedgehog Fibres. I used 3.5 mm needles, and knit it mostly in stocking stitch, with a few rows of texture for a bit of interest.

I've also knit a cowl from some handspun yarn. I bought some mixed fibre batts from LHogan; I roughly separated the colours & spun the yarn from light to dark shades of blue, & then chain plied to keep the colour progression. It seems that I didn't bother writing down any notes as I knit this cowl. I probably used 3.5 mm needles. It's mostly stocking stitch with occasional purl ridges & rows of YO, K2tog across. Ooops.

This cowl was knit from a full skein of Jawoll Magic sock yarn, picked up at last year's knitting & stitching show. I have recently realised that I have knit almost nothing I bought at last year's show. Which leaves me doubting whether or not I should go this year. But as pointed out to me, even if you don't buy much, there is plenty of inspiration to be had at the stalls & exhibition spaces.

For this cowl, I used 3.25 mm needles. I cast on 150 stitches, and knit in stocking stitch in the round, with an occasional band of reverse stocking stitch. The finished cowl is very long & drapey, & will fit over your head as a hood for extra snuggley warmth.

I'm currently knitting more cowls. It seems to be a bit of an obsession at the moment, & I don't have specific people in mind for these cowls. Might be best to donate to a craft sale in aid of a good cause.

  1. Gorgeous, the pink and blue look especially good on you :) I'm kind of the same about the K&S but I haven't been in two years and a look won't hurt, right?

  2. The shawl and the cowls came out lovely. I went to the Knit and Stitch show on Friday. I think I might make a few hand spun, knitted shawls too. I have been eating up my handspun stash by making mittens.
